The medieval castles of Absheron: Mardakan, Ramana and beyond
A guide to the medieval defensive towers of the Absheron Peninsula near Baku — the castles of Mardakan, Ramana and Nardaran, their history as watchtowers, and how to visit them on a day trip.
The Absheron Peninsula around Baku is dotted with squat stone towers that most visitors drive straight past. They shouldn't. These medieval castles — at Mardakan, Ramana, Nardaran and other villages — are among the oldest surviving structures in the region, and together they tell the story of how Baku's hinterland defended itself for centuries.
A landscape of watchtowers
In medieval times the Absheron villages built defensive towers — tall, thick-walled stone keeps used as watchpoints and refuges against raids. Because the peninsula was wealthy from trade, farming and later oil, it needed protecting, and the result was a network of fortifications you can still trace across the landscape today.
Mardakan and Ramana
Two of the best-preserved are close together:
- Mardakan has both a round and a rectangular castle; the sturdy quadrangular tower is a classic Absheron keep, well preserved and climbable, with views over the gardens the area was known for.
- Ramana castle rises on a rocky outcrop above its village — a compact, dramatic tower that looks every bit the medieval stronghold and is one of the most photogenic on the peninsula.
Nardaran and the wider network
Other villages such as Nardaran hold their own historic towers and monuments, part of the same defensive fabric. Seen together, they turn the Absheron Peninsula into an open-air museum of medieval Azerbaijani military architecture — a low-key counterpart to the grand monuments of the Baku Old City.
