Karabakh permit FAQ for foreigners

Can tourists visit Karabakh on their own?

Yes. Foreign tourists can visit Karabakh and Shusha independently once access is arranged. You don't need to join a guided tour. You only need the access request handled through the correct channel, which Pink Travel does for you.

Why does the Karabakh portal ask for an Azerbaijani ID app?

The official portal verifies identity through ASAN Login, Azerbaijan’s national e-ID. It was built for residents, so foreign passport holders cannot sign in. That is the blocker most travelers hit, and exactly what we handle for you.

Do I need a permit to visit Shusha?

Travel to Shusha and the wider Karabakh region goes through Azerbaijan’s official access framework. Pink Travel arranges that access for foreign visitors so you can travel there legally and independently.

Do I have to book a tour to get the permit?

No. We offer Karabakh permit assistance as a standalone service. Book a guided tour only if you want one; many travelers just want the access handled and prefer to explore on their own.

Is one day in Karabakh enough, or should we stay overnight?

Shusha is a long drive from Baku, so a day trip is a very long day with a short visit at the end of it. If you can spare a second day, take it: an overnight gives you Shusha unhurried and in better light. We still run the day trip for travellers who only have the one day.

Khalid at the Pink Travel office in Baku

Khalid

Khalid spent most of his childhood in Shusha. That is why this company is built around Karabakh rather than treating it as one stop among many, and why he would rather you saw the city slowly than efficiently. Showing Azerbaijan to people who have never seen it is the part of the work he likes most.

What our travelers say

Real stories from travelers who discovered Karabakh and Azerbaijan with Pink Travel.

The tour was genuinely fantastic. Top-class guide. A brand new, comfortable coach. The hotels were all exactly like the photos, really great. The biggest and most important plus of this tour is the low price combined with top quality — exactly what every traveller is looking for. We liked absolutely everything, and we will be booking with this company again. Many thanks ☺️

We’ve just returned from a long 4-day trip with Khalid and Pink Travel. Everything went smoothly and exactly as agreed. Khalid catered to our individual requirements and everything was brilliant. I can highly recommend his services. A wonderful country – we’ll definitely be back for more adventures, and Chalid will be our guide again! I’d give it 6 stars :-)

I had a bespoke two day trip with my driver Nijat. Nijat was fantastic and full of information and advice about Azerbaijan. He was kind attentive and made the trip truly special. The trip was well organised and everything went smoothly. I felt safe at all times and Xalid was quick to respond prior to my trip to help with any questions.

We had a great trip to Karabakh with Pink Travel and Xalid. It was a private 2 day tour which was specifically tailored to our interests. Xalid was very good at communicating with us prior to the trip and we felt that we were in good hands. We stayed in a hotel in Khankendi which was in the centre of the city, Xalid showed us all the main sights across Karabakh in the two days we were there, it's such beautiful countryside. The highlight for me, of course, was Susha! Xalid sorted out our authorisation to visit the area in advance and he also took us to meet some of his friends in the region and we also had the chance to chat to other locals during the course of our trip. He was an excellent driver and we thoroughly enjoyed our time with him.

He was not only a knowledgeable guide but also very entertaining, making the whole time enjoyable and memorable. I really appreciated his flexibility and professionalism. I would happily travel with Pink Travel Agency and Khalid again. Highly recommended!
