Rent a car or hire a driver in Azerbaijan? An honest comparison
Renting a car in Baku or travelling with a driver: the rules, the roads, Karabakh, and what each really costs you. Which one suits your trip.
Almost everyone planning more than Baku reaches the same question: rent a car, or have someone drive? We sell the second, so take this with that in mind. But there are trips where renting is plainly the better answer, and we would rather you heard that from us.
What renting a car here involves
The paperwork is simple. Traffic drives on the right. A national licence in Latin script is generally accepted for a short visit, but carry an International Driving Permit with it, and if your licence is in another script, the permit is not optional. Rental desks commonly ask for drivers aged 21 or over with a couple of years behind the wheel.
The rules are enforced by cameras, not by luck. Speed cameras are on the main roads and all over Baku, and the fines find you through the rental company after you have flown home. Unless signs say otherwise, the limits are 60 km/h in town, 90 outside and 110 on motorways. The alcohol limit is zero.
Baku is the hard part. The city's traffic is fast and assertive, lane discipline is loose at busy junctions, and parking in the centre takes patience. Most visitors who rent find the open road easy and the capital tiring.
Where renting genuinely wins
A long trip at your own rhythm. Two weeks, a loose plan, the freedom to stop in a village because the light is good: a car gives you that.
You have done this kind of trip before. If mountain roads and foreign signage are nothing new, most of what a driver provides is something you already have.
A family that wants its own space. Children, luggage and a car that is yours for the whole trip can matter more than anything else on this list.
If those describe you, rent. Take the city days on foot and by ride-hailing app, which works well in Baku, and pick the car up on the way out.
Where a driver wins
The mountain roads. The road up to Khinalig runs through a narrow gorge; the routes to Lahij and through the Greater Caucasus foothills are slow and winding. With a driver you look at them instead of at the next bend.
Days that do not end where they began. Baku to Sheki to Gabala and back, or a transfer straight from the airport to the regions: with a driver there is no car to return and no one-way arrangement to make.
Karabakh. Entry to Karabakh goes through an official framework, for the car and for everyone in it. With a rental you arrange that yourself, and you should ask the rental company whether the car may go there at all. With us, the permit is filed for every traveller as part of the trip, whether that is a tour or simply a transfer from Baku.
Knowing what you are looking at. A driver who knows the country stops where it is worth stopping, and the guide on our private tours explains what you are seeing. A navigation app does neither.
The money question
The daily rate on a rental site is not the comparison. Add fuel, the deposit, parking, any one-way fee, and the days you spend driving rather than looking. On the other side, a driver's price covers the car, the fuel and the person.
There is no single answer, but there is a pattern. The more days you will spend behind the wheel, and the more of you there are to share a car, the more renting makes sense. The fewer the days, the harder the roads, and the more of them lead to Karabakh or the high mountains, the more a driver earns their price.
The honest way to decide is with real numbers. Send us the route and the dates on the transfers page and we will reply with the price for a car and driver, then compare it with the rental quote you have.
A middle way
Plenty of travellers do both. They walk and take app cabs in Baku, hire a driver for the hard days, such as Karabakh, Quba and Khinalig or Gobustan with its mud volcanoes, and rent a car only for the stretch they want to drive themselves.
A straight recommendation
Rent if: you are confident driving abroad, the trip is long and loose, and Karabakh is not on the plan.
Take a driver if: the trip is a week or less, the mountains or Karabakh are on it, or you would rather spend the day looking out of the window.
Not sure? Tell us where you want to go and for how long on the trip builder. We will tell you honestly which suits it.
